In one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the Pakistan Super League, Quetta Gladiators defended a modest 142-run total, pulling off a sensational five-run victory against Karachi Kings at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. This became the lowest total ever defended at the venue in PSL history, thanks to a stunning bowling performance led by a united pace-spin attack and clutch fielding.
The match seemed firmly in Karachi’s control early on. Chasing 143, they raced to 75 for 1 in just eight overs. Tim Seifert (47) and James Vince (30) looked set to cruise to victory after overcoming the early loss of David Warner, who was dismissed by Mohammad Amir in the first over.
But Quetta Gladiators had other plans.
What followed was a remarkable collapse triggered by disciplined bowling and smart captaincy. Saud Shakeel, introducing himself into the attack, removed Vince with a clever over that applied immediate pressure. From there, Karachi lost momentum completely. Only 27 runs came in the next eight overs, and the wickets kept tumbling.
Abrar Ahmed’s four-over spell for just 15 runs, including the wicket of Khushdil Shah, was a game-changer. Meanwhile, Mohammad Wasim (2-22) and Amir (2-26) struck crucial blows, with tight lines and aggressive lengths. Shan Masood’s painful 9 off 17 balls added to Karachi’s woes as the required run rate climbed over eight.
Even a late flurry from Hasan Ali, who struck out at the death, couldn’t revive the chase. The Kings were restricted to 137 for 8, falling just five runs short.
Earlier, after being put in to bat, Quetta had struggled against a fiery spell from Hasan Ali, who took 3 wickets for 33 runs, dismantling the top order with quick strikes. However, Faheem Ashraf’s 43 off 27 and Kusal Mendis’ 36 off 22 provided a much-needed rescue act. Their 59-run stand helped push the total past the 140 mark, giving Quetta just enough to bowl at.
What looked like a sub-par total was turned into a match-winning effort by sheer grit and a flawless display in the field. With this win, Quetta Gladiators not only gained two vital points but also etched their name in PSL history for defending the lowest total ever at Gaddafi Stadium.
