New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry’s participation in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against India remains uncertain following a shoulder injury sustained during the semi-final clash against South Africa. Henry, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker so far, injured his shoulder while executing a catch to dismiss Heinrich Klaasen.
Despite the setback, Henry displayed resilience by returning to bowl two additional overs and actively engaging in fielding after his comeback. Initially, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner expressed optimism regarding Henry’s recovery, but head coach Gary Stead has since indicated that his fitness is still in question with just over 48 hours remaining before the highly anticipated final.
“We’re giving him every chance to play in the final,” Stead stated. “The positive takeaway is that he managed to return and bowl after sustaining the injury. While scans have been conducted, his availability is still uncertain at this stage.”
Henry has been a pivotal player for New Zealand in the tournament, claiming 10 wickets at an outstanding average of 16.70. His most notable performance came against India in the group stage, where he secured five wickets in Dubai, the venue for the final showdown.
Stead further mentioned that Henry is still experiencing significant soreness due to the impact on his shoulder. However, the team remains hopeful about his recovery in time for the crucial match.
Should Henry be ruled out, New Zealand have right-arm seamer Jacob Duffy as a backup option. Duffy has not yet played in the tournament but was part of the pre-tournament tri-series against Pakistan, where he registered figures of 1 for 48 in seven overs.
With the final fast approaching, New Zealand will be closely monitoring Henry’s condition, as his presence could be instrumental in their quest for the ICC Champions Trophy title.
